No no, I am not pregnant at 62. But you may have danced with me for many years, or many times over the years, and yet not know what else I’ve been up to.
But the truth is, conscious movement, and what can look like dance, is only a small part of what happens in the spaces I have been inviting people into.
Because (and what constantly amazes me about it) movement is a direct portal to the deep experience of the body or, in other words, the experience of a human being on this planet.
Dance brings up feelings and unfinished relational business (don’t tell me you haven’t noticed). On the same hand, inner process is best done with the help of embodied movement.
Stillness practice drops us into a space from which all dances arise and into which they all return – into the space of possibility but also into the very human fear of emptiness.
Working in nature opens up a whole new level of elemental healing.
There are all kinds of complex methods out there for therapeutic work. You can go to many expensive trainings and learn many tricks.
Yet at the core of all healing is this very simple invitation: to be here with life as it’s moving through me, to give up the argument, to allow what I am feeling, to remember that I am held in the Great Heart of Mercy.
The support of a committed circle of practice offers a depth and magnitude of healing which is in my experience rarely available in one-on-one work, as much as individual work has its place and value.
Despite my less than masterful sequencing and breaking down of the teachings (which is something I admire about master teachers and have been aspiring to with various results), the effects were impressive.
It’s a little tricky to work with the enormity of this material – you know, the whole mess and miracle of human existence – in a logical sequential manner. As you can imagine, the areas of exploration overlap and deeply influence each other. But somehow, putting it all together in the same room, impossible as it used to seem, and then sticking together for the long haul, brings about a depth of healing that I have not witnessed in any other context.
On the simplest level what comes up in partner dances is such a mirror of how we do relationships off the dance floor. On the deepest level, being consistently seen and held in love no matter how many times I fall on my face – that’s pure magic.
Doesn’t that sound good?
