…which means it can directly and quickly access layers of the unconscious.
Movement does not lie: gesture, posture, small movements we are unaware of can be used to dis-cover / uncover what’s going on under the surface of everyday oblivion. In inner work, very often a sensation, movement, or gesture is worth a thousand words.
Movement is often needed to complete unfinished emotional and relational business from the past. Impulses, responses, expressions not allowed in the past (kicking, screaming, crying, punching, reaching, pushing, pulling, wrestling, running, shaking, spitting all the way to throwing up…. and more) are held in the body memory as tension, energy block, or other physical symptoms.
Movement is the fastest way to get to the heart of the issue. Sometimes no amount of talking can touch what lives deep in implicit (body) memory because those memories come from the pre-verbal time.
Oh, yes – the body remembers it all and is happy to talk about it. Not in English though – but rather through sensation, texture, breath, sound, movement… the secret language of the body.
